Making Education Interesting with Learning Management Systems

Technology has changed the delivery of education in many ways.  With the development of learning management systems, teachers are able to take advantage of technology to improve teaching methods and student achievement.  Before you decide to engage in this approach to teaching, you need to understand why it is important so you can leverage its benefits.

Students are Tech-Savvy

Kids are growing up in a technology-infused world.  You cannot expect them to want to learn solely from textbooks.  You need to be able to incorporate digital learning into your curriculum.  More classrooms are now equipped with iPads that students can use for learning activities. You also have mobile phones, laptops, and desktop computers as access points. If you do not have experience with such technology, you can take online professional development courses to learn. The important thing is meeting students where they are which is clearly in the digital world.

Education Needs to Engage

A critical component of successful education is capturing and keeping student attention.  Teaching must be interactive and engaging for students to effectively learn and retain knowledge.  Learning management systems can help with this process.  You are able to design your own digital curriculum that is aligned with State Content Standards.  You know what students need to learn and you know what your students are interested in which makes you the perfect person to create digital courses and teaching supports for your classroom.  While improving students’ learning experiences, you are meeting district teaching requirements.

Relevant Instruction Facilitates Active Learning

Because students are “plugged-in,” it just makes sense you would want to know about their experiences so you can make your instruction relevant.  Relevancy is often the missing ingredient in instructional strategies. For example, teaching math is infinitely more interesting if you make it relevant to the students in your classroom.  They may not be able to relate to the story problems in traditional textbooks.  Instead, give them problems to solve they can relate to so they are motivated to learn.  LMS makes it easy for you to be creative with course content.

Learning to Use Technology in the Classroom is Easy

One of the best ways to do this is for you to engage in e-learning activities yourself.  You can do this by participating in professional development courses designed with learning management systems.  Take notes about what you find interesting about the process and incorporate that into your own classroom.  You can also become a certified e-teacher which can be useful when designing digital courses.  Becoming certified gives you the confidence to create courses your students will appreciate.

Learning management systems make it easier for teachers to get back to teaching.  You are able to spend less time creating lesson plans and distributing paper homework assignments.  With LMSs you do all of that online.  You can even conduct student assessments in the same manner.  You get real-time information you can use to make immediate adjustment to your teaching strategies. With LMS, you get instant access to an instructional strategy that caters to every student in your classroom.
