The UFC is filled with top quality fighters who produce gripping action every time they step into the octagon. Each warrior must produce their best or else their weakness will be ruthlessly exposed by their opponent. The UFC is an organization that continues to grow with numerous epic matches already lined up for the rest of the year. However, we take a look into the recent past to highlight three of the most notable UFC fights in the last few months.
1 – Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez II
This was a significant fight because it may signify a changing of the guard as Velasquez recaptured his heavyweight title in this eagerly awaited rematch. It was the headline event of UFC 155 on 29 December 2012 and it did not disappoint as the new champion gained revenge for his first round KO defeat to Dos Santos in their first bout. Although he did not return the KO favor, winning via unanimous decision, Velasquez was extremely dominant and gave Dos Santos something of a beating from the first bell right through to the end. Velasquez celebrated by signing a new 8 fight deal with the UFC and fights Antonio Silva in another rematch in May.
2 – Rousey vs. Carmouche
This fight made history at UFC 157 on 23 February 2013 by being the first ever female UFC fight and Liz Carmouche had the honor of being the first woman to step into the famed octagon as she took on undefeated Ronda Rousey. It has been suggested that the event topped over 400,000 PPV buys and the fight did not disappoint as the duo crammed a huge amount of action into a 4 minute and 49 second fight. Carmouche was close to winning via submission before Rousey recovered and eventually forced the submission before the end of round 1 to remain unbeaten.
3 – Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann
This fight was notable because it helped put paid to rumors that Silva was past his best and on the brink of retirement. It was the headliner on a Fuel 8 extravaganza in Japan on 3 March 2013 and attracted almost 500,000 viewers, a record for the television station. It was a tremendous bout with Stann winning the first round with impressive striking but Silva roared back with hard punches of his own and dropped Stann near the end of round 2. Stann was unable to recover and Silva finished him off with a succession of brutal blows that ended the fight.
The UFC always delivers upon its promise of action and fans of the sport were treated to several great events recently. The great news is that this carnival of non-stop action doesn’t look like ending any time soon!
