Pepsi announced that their new PET bottle is made from plant based renewable resources and is 100% recyclable.
A spokesman for Pepsi said that the bottle “Far surpasses existing industry technologiesâ€, a clear dig at rivals Coca-Cola whose Plant Bottle is only made up of 30% plant based material.
Just how the company has been able to come up with such a breakthrough in packaging is don to years of research and using raw materials such as corn husks, pine bark and even switch grass which they have used to create a material that looks and feels like plastic but fully recyclable.
Pepsis Chairman and CEO, Indra Nooyi, said: “PepsiCo is in a unique position, as one of the world's largest food and beverage businesses, to ultimately source agricultural byproducts from our food business to manufacture a more environmentally preferable bottle for our beverages business – a sustainable business model that we believe brings to life the essence of Performance with Purpose.â€
The new green bottle will be put into pilot production during 2012 and if this proves to be successful then the company has said that it intends to then move the bottle into full scale production.
It will be hoped by Pepsi bosses that this could possible be he boost that they need to see them being able to take on beverage rivals Coca-Cola as the company slipped his week into third position being Coca-Cola and Diet Coke.
