Thinking Holiday? Think of Turkey PDF Print E-mail

The Eurozone with all of it’s popular destinations, Spain, Greece, Italy, Cyprus and France has seen a decline in interest for holidays over the past twelve months with British holidaymakers, this is due largely to the fact that the British pound does not go anyway near to buying what it once did.

Time was, when a pound was worth 1.4 Euros, this meant of course that eating out was relatively cheap, now of course the Euro has achieved almost parity, in fact there have been periods when the pound did not even buy one Euro; this has meant that not only is it not cheap, it is actually very expensive!

Consequently the British are seeking their quota of sunshine in alternative countries. Turkey has seen a huge increase in interest, and for many Brits it has been a revelation! Far from being the arid barren county that their minds eye has conjured up it is in fact a green and fertile country.

The people are warm, friendly and welcoming of tourists; whilst there are numerous resorts along the coastline of Turkey, which will cater for any type of holiday that one could wish for, the town that I would recommend without hesitation is Kalkan.

Kalkan was once a sleepy fishing village, it clings to the rocky face of the Taurus Mountains and cascades down to a natural deep water harbour.

Over the past two decades it has developed to become a sophisticated holiday destination; it caters mainly for the slightly older traveller, being more of a dining culture at evening time with it’s many restaurants serving food ranging from traditional Turkish to high class cosmopolitan cuisine, all at very affordable prices. The harbour, which would once have bustled with a small fishing fleet is now more commonly the reserve of yachts and impressive motor launches, indeed during the Summer of 2009, what is reputably the most expensive privately owned yacht in the world was anchored in Kalkan bay for a couple of days. ‘Yacht 1’ owned by a Russian billionaire was photographed by one of the local online newspapers thus giving the town a little extra credibility as one of the destinations. Stars of the film and music industry have often been seen in Kalkan and are treated to the same (and no more) hospitality as any visitor, wherever you go within Turkey you will be greeted by ‘ho?geldiniz’, which means ‘welcome’, and the welcome is sincere!

The old town of Kalkan is a maze of narrow crazy paved streets with old Greek buildings (Kalkan was once predominantly occupied by Greek people and called Kalamaki) within these streets one can find shops selling arts and crafts, fine clothing and jewellery, exquisite rugs and carpets as well as the coffee houses and restaurants.

Dotted around the hillside on the periphery of the town are numerous privately owned villas many of them available for holiday rental, one such is Villa Katmar.

Villa Katmar is a detached luxury villa standing within mature gardens and having that all important  private pool. ?t has four bedrooms and magnificent sea views to the front and mountain views to the sides and rear. ?t is equipped and furnished to the standard that the discerning holidaymaker would expect and having plenty of outdoor space in which to either sun worship or, if preferred, relax in a furnished shaded haven.

Kalkan is within easy reach of two international airports, the nearest being Dalaman, which is a pleasant and easy drive of aproximately one hour twenty minutes, whilst Antalya is aproximately two and a half hours driving distance.

The website for Villa Katmar not only will tell you more about the villa itself but also has an abundance of information about Kalkan and Turkey in general as well as having numerous useful links to assist with arranging your dream holiday in Turkey.
