The New York Times David Brooks tells it "all" about the right-wing media.
Â
With all the bizarre noise that Mr. Glenn Beck makes, I have had more than one request to go after Beck the way I wrote about Rush Limbaugh’s performance a couple of weeks ago. I agree with most reasonably intelligent individuals that Mr. Beck’s “mental elevator†just doesn’t go all the way to the top floor. Yes, he’s making a pile of money with his books and notoriety, but he’s also lost over 60 radio and TV sponsors for calling President Obama a racist. Even the Republican Southern Senator, Lindsay Graham said in an interview that Glenn was not a Republican, was a “cynic†and that he, “didn’t know anyone that could make that much money by cryingâ€. One can only hope that Beck’s “15 minutes of fame†is on its final 5 minutes.
ÂI was considering writing an article on Mr. Beck’s strange media presence until I read a recent column in the New York Times by the well known author, commentator and syndicated op-ed writer, David Brooks.
ÂNow Mr. Brooks is anything but a liberal. He has been a mostly conservative writer for as long as I have been reading the New York Times, and that’s been for a number of years. But I really have to give Mr. Brooks a big hand and my appreciation for really “telling it like it is†about what he calls the right-wing media “talk-jocksâ€.
ÂIt does my heart good to see and read that someone that normally leans toward the conservative side, would actually “tell the truthâ€(an uncommon event for Republicans) about those in the right-wing media. Mr. Brooks seriously made it clear that the right-wing talkers make a lot of noise on the air, and in some cases even convince the right wing politicians that they have “the powerâ€. But then Mr. Brooks says “they claim to represent a hidden majority but in fact, they represent a mere niche, even in the Republican Partyâ€.
ÂMr. Brooks doesn’t hold back on who he’s talking about either. He began his article by making it clear that his following article was targeted at,â€Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and the restâ€.
ÂHe then goes back in history to show how when the right-wing “talk-jocks†strongly supported those for the last Republican primary such as Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney, while talking down John McCain and Mike Huckabee, it was those the “jocks†supported that lost during the primaries. And as he said, when Limbaugh also went negative after McCain and Huckabee, it was McCain and Huckabee that surged ahead.
ÂAs Mr. Brooks stated; “…the imaginary voting armies [did] not materialize. McCain wins the South Carolina primary and goes on to win the nomination. The talk jocks can’t even deliver the conservative voters who show up at Republican primaries. They can’t even deliver South Carolina!â€
ÂI agree with David Brooks that the right-wing talkers are very similar to the “Wizard of Ozâ€. Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly and the rest are just like the small wizard behind the curtain in the Emerald City. They turn the dials, they stir up the callers and the listeners, but the numbers don’t change and the listening individuals never show up in the voting booths.
ÂWhen you have become the party of “noâ€, of “half-truths†and “no-truthsâ€, eventually the public will see that the “emperor has no clothesâ€, (and we should be so lucky that the GOP would also see that truth).
Mr. Brooks says it all with this comment: “Over the years, I have asked many politicians what happens when Limbaugh and his colleagues attack. The story is always the same. Hundreds of calls come in. The receptionists are miserable. But the numbers back home do not move. There is no effect on the favorability rating or the re-election prospects. In the media world, he is a giant. In the real world, he’s not. But this is not merely a story of weakness. It is a story of resilience. For no matter how often their hollowness is exposed, the jocks still reweave the myth of their own power. They still ride the airwaves claiming to speak for millions. They still confuse listeners with voters. And they are aided in this endeavor by their enablers. They are enabled by cynical Democrats, who love to claim that Rush Limbaugh controls the G.O.P. They are enabled by lazy pundits who find it easier to argue with showmen than with people whose opinions are based on knowledge. They are enabled by the slightly educated snobs who believe that Glenn Beck really is the voice of Middle America.† Yes, I could have written an article on Glenn Beck, and I still may as he continues to offer so much material to work with. But it was so satisfying to read inputs from a well respected, conservative third party that is a part of the print media and has an audience the size of the New York Times. It was nice to let someone else lay out what so many of us see and hear that send us right through the roof. Thank you Mr. David Brooks. Copyright G.Ater 2009 Follow me on Twitter: gater01
