The Union minister for Rural Development passed away on 3rd June, 2014 after he met with an accident on his way to the airport at Prithviraj road-Tughlak road, New Delhi. He was declared dead at 7:20 AM and the post mortem report suggested he died of cardiac arrest because of shock during the accident that took place around 6:20 AM. His body was kept outside in the BJP headquarters premises and all major party leaders paid their last homage. The people who came to pay their homage included Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi.
Gopinath Munde was born in the year 1949 in a middle class family in Parali, Maharashtra. He attended a government primary school where classes were conducted under a tree. He entered into politics after he met Pramod Mahajan, a friend and colleague at college. Their friendship grew when as a student leader he and Pramod Mahajan were incarcerated in Nashik Jail during the emergency imposed by former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. His closeness with Mahajan was furthered after he married Mahajan’s sister Pradnya. After the formation of BJP in the 80’s he became the President of the Maharashtra unit of the BJP's youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He was the OBC face of BJP from Maharashtra and together with Pramod Mahajan took BJP to new heights. During his political career of over four decades he became Leader of Opposition in Maharastra Vidhan Sabha, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and was appointed as Minister of Rural Development in the 16th Lok Sabha. After the demise of Pramod Mahajan in 2006 he stood by the Mahajan family. As a senior BJP leader he had a close proximity with party veterans namely Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani among others. Together with Pramod Mahajan he took on the Sharad Pawar regime and made BJP stronger in Maharashtra.
His last rites will be performed with full state honours in his village Parali, in Beed constituency on 4th July. He is survived by wife Pradnya and three daughters – Pankaja, Pritam and Yashashri. The government of India declared that the flags at official buildings to be kept at half mast.
