The 2013 Volvo S60 Receives Top Safety Pick Plus Award

The 2013 Volvo S60 will be honored with the Top Safety Pick Plus Award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The new Top Safety Pick Plus Award is being given to 2013 vehicle models that show superior crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, designed this award for vehicles that received good or acceptable ratings in the new IIHS small overlap test and top scores in several other IIHS tests. Some of these other IIHS evaluations include moderate overlap frontal crashes, rear crashes, side crashes, and rollovers. So far, the 2013 Volvo S60 is one of two midsize luxury vehicles to receive this award.

One of the most important tests that the IIHS puts new vehicles through is the Small Overlap Frontal Crash Test. In this test, 25 percent of the car’s front end on the driver’s side crashes into a 5 foot barrier at 40 miles per hour. Sitting in the driver’s seat is a male Hybrid III dummy, used to replicate what happens to a driver when the front corner of a car crashes into another object.

A representative for the IIHS said that while almost every new car does well in other frontal crash tests, there are still more than 10,000 deaths caused by frontal crashes each year. The small overlap crashes are one of the major sources for those deaths, which is why the IIHS is implementing this new testing program. The replication of these crashes is based on years of analyzing real world crashes.

The 2013 Volvo S60 received an Overall Rating of Good, and was one of only two tested cars to get that rating. According to the IIHS, the S60 was structurally the best vehicle tested. During the test, the safety cage was able to stay intact in large part because of the reinforcement of the upper rails and a steel cross member underneath the instrument panel. During the crash testing, the S60’s occupant compartment held up well. There was only minor intrusion in the occupant compartment. Compared to the S60, some of the other vehicles tested had up to 10 times the intrusion in the occupant compartment.
