General Motors announced that it will be relocating production of the Camaro from Canada to a plant in Lansing, Michigan.
GM has recently announced that it will be switching plants for the production of the Camaro. The all-American car is actually currently produced in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. It is built alongside the Buick Regal and the Cadillac XTS. However, the next generation model, the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro, which will debut sometime in 2014, will actually be produced at a plant in Lansing, Michigan, right in Shaheen Chevrolet’s backyard.
There are several reasons for the move to an American plant. In a statement, GM cited “lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies” as the major determining factor in the decision. Another reason is practicality. The Camaro is a rear wheel-drive sports car, so it makes sense that it will join the Cadillac CTS and the Cadillac ATS at the Lansing plant. Both the CTS and the ATS are rear wheel-drive vehicles. Finally, the Camaro is often cited as the American muscle car. It is almost a symbol of the U.S. auto industry. It only makes sense that its production plant would find a home in the States.
In place of the Camaro, the Canada plant will take over production of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala. This restructuring is actually beneficial both to Canada and to the U.S. While the U.S. must wait about a year to begin production on the Camaro, which will bring job growth to Lansing, Canada can begin a higher production level than normal with the Impala immediately.
Production will most likely begin near the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014. In the meantime, the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Camaro is now available at Lansing’s favorite Chevy dealer, Shaheen Chevrolet.
