Today’s parents worry about their children’s future. Hardworking parents observe the ever increasing cost of a college education and their children’s inability to swiftly complete their college education. According to the College Board, the average in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges this school year rose 8.3%, and with room and board, now exceeds $17,000 a year. Sadly, today’s college education is bankrupting many families’ dreams of a better life for their children.
Some people believe that students are taking more than four years to get Bachelor’s Degrees due to numerous distractions. Former Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich explained when he was on the campaign trail, that many students have become a slacker: “Students take fewer classes per semester. They take more years to get through.” Dr. Green has done extensive research on assisting today’s college student. Each year, he visits universities where he talks with college administrators, students, faculty, and other supporters. He offers lectures and student mentoring. Dr. Green argues that parents can make a difference for their child’s outcome: “Regardless of where you stand on today’s college students, it is clear that some intervention is necessary if the students are to be successful in this troubled market.”
Dr. Green says that students should hit the job market early as a freshman by signing up in the school’s career center. However, he has found that many students don’t even know job career services are provided on campus until they are seniors. Dr. Green explains, “We have got to do a better job of career preparation. Experience is everything. Some parents may need to at least know their child is taking the basis steps.” His last book, Job Strategies for the 21st Century: How to Assist Today’s College Students during Economic Turbulence, has been rated number one on Amazon.com. The book provides practical solutions to the challenges today’s college students face as they struggle to find employment in an unstable economy.
Dr. Green argues, “I think we have not adequately prepared this generation for economic downturns. It requires a mental toughness that most parents have shielded their child from by solving the adult child’s problems.” Dr. Green makes himself available to speak or consult to universities, community groups, and parents who desire to make their students more competitive for future job opportunities.
