Friendly Ford Celebrates Top Safety Pick Plus Distinction for 2013 Ford Fusion

The 2013 Ford Fusion has been named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2013 Ford Fusion a Top Safety Pick a few months back, it was already distinguished as the industry best in vehicular safety. Now the IIHS has tacked yet another gold star to the Fusion’s perfect record, reviewing the Fusion once again in an all-new test and naming it a Top Safety Pick Plus. This honor is the highest level of safety distinction in the industry. At this point, only twelve other vehicles have received these high marks, making the Fusion a standout for the 2013 model year.

Before the new addition of a fifth test to the IIHS’s safety evaluation, a vehicle had to receive the highest ranking in four tests to receive the title of a Top Safety Pick. The four tests included front, side, rear, and rollover crashes. The fifth crash test that has joined the analysis is a small overlap frontal test, protection against which is crucial. A representative of Friendly Ford explained that this fifth test has been long-awaited, describing how the evaluation simulates a crash in which one of the corners of the car’s front end makes contact with an object. This kind of accident can actually result in a large amount of damage to the frame, so vehicles that perform well in these tests deserve special recognition. Cars that pass this test, in addition to the other four, receive the newly created honor of Top Safety Pick Plus.

The Fusion has a number of safety technologies aimed at preventing collisions and even more to protect the precious cargo in the event that a collision cannot be avoided. Adaptive cruise control maintains a preset distance from preceding vehicles. In addition, the Blind Spot Information System, which also features cross-traffic alert, lets the driver know when other vehicles are merging into the driver’s blind spot, as well as when traffic is coming from either side while the driver backs out of a parking spot. Another crucial safety technology is the forward collision warning. This system notifies the driver of potential crashes and can even get the brakes ready to significantly decrease the time it takes to stop the car.

In the event of an inevitable accident, the Fusion features a number of safety systems that optimize passenger protection. The Personal Safety System incorporates new seatbelt technology, a series of sensors, and enhanced front airbags. On top of that, the Fusion features an intelligent restraint control module that collects stats about the sizes of both the driver and the front passenger, then takes that information and immediately calculates just how the dual-stage front airbags should be deployed for the optimum safety of each specific individual.

The all-new 2013 Ford Fusion is now available at Friendly Ford.
