Friendly Ford Celebrates High Fuel Efficiency and Active Noise Cancellation for 2012 Ford Fusion Hyb

Ford has done it again with the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid. The all-new Fusion merits an EPA-certified 47 mpg on the highway and in the city, giving it an overall combined rating of 47 mpg. With fuel prices reaching all time highs, this is one statistic that cannot be overlooked. Ford has worked tirelessly to achieve such a high rating for its hybrid, and it is an unusual technology that has made it happen—Active Noise Cancellation Technology, to be exact.

Upon first glance, it is difficult to see how such a technology could affect high fuel economy. The secret lies in convenience. The fuel rating would be possible without the technology, but it would produce such an unpleasant noise that drivers would never agree to it.

That is where the Active Noise Cancellation steps in. Dr. Takeshi Abe, Henry Ford Technical Fellow for Noise, Vibration, and Harshness, stated, “The Fusion Hybrid leverages this advanced technology to help deliver maximum fuel economy for the customer. Reduced powertrain noise in the passenger compartment becomes the icing on the cake.” What he means is simple: at the lower speeds at which the Ford Fusion Hybrid runs most efficiently, the engine would constantly produce a series of loud and obnoxious booms. The frequent engine explosions would be unpleasant enough to drivers and passengers that this type of engine for the Fusion would be ruled out all together—if not for the Active Noise Cancellation.

Because of the Active Noise Cancellation, these engine sounds are inaudible to the driver and passengers. How does it work? The Fusion employs a predictive control system that notes driver behavior and how the engine responds so that it can anticipate the resultant sound before it is ever even produced. Then, three sensitive microphones located in the interior headliners detect and measure the noise from the engine, releasing a signal to the Active Noise Cancelling Technology, which instantly produces opposing sound waves through the Fusion’s audio system which cancel out the engine sounds, so that the drivers and passengers hear nothing but silent bliss.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid shows that Ford is always one step ahead of the competition.
