To help drivers get better fuel economy, Chevrolet has improved the engine on the upcoming 2014 Chevrolet Impala. It will have new advanced valvetrain technology on the Ecotec 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The new engine technology is called Intake Valve Lift Control. It enables variable intake valve lift, duration, and timing based on the needs of the engine. At low speeds and lighter loads, the system only pumps the air it needs to operate efficiently. In high-lift mode, which operates at higher speeds and heavy loads, the system provides the full output capabilities of the engine.
“Intake Valve Lift Control works so seamlessly drivers aren’t likely to notice it at all,” said Mike Anderson, GM global chief engineer for Ecotec engines. “What they will notice is a fuel savings of up to one mile per gallon.”
The Impala will also include other fuel saving technologies, such as an electric variable-assist steering system that helps conserve fuel by only using energy when the steering wheel is turned. Additionally, all three of the available powertrains use direct-injection and lightweight components to save even more fuel.
The 10th generation of the Impala has improved style, features, and safety. The new engine is just one more added benefit of the Impala, which already gained many aesthetic improvements as well. The Impala will take on a contemporary look, yet have a profile that pays tribute to past Impalas. Drivers can look forward to improved technology and the first use of Chevrolet’s collision mitigation braking, in addition to the new engine.
