The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently updated its annual list of Top Safety Picks, and 2013 marks the inaugural year for a new class of Top Safety Picks; the Top Safety Pick+. The 2013 XC60 represents the pinnacle in Volvo safety innovation. The sporty midsize luxury SUV is loaded with advanced safety features to make it one of the safest vehicles not only in its class, but anywhere on the road. The 2013 XC60 has been deemed by some as the “car that stops itself” thanks to Volvo’s City Safety system. The City Safety system works when the CX60 is traveling at 31 mph or less by detecting stopped or slowing vehicles in front of the CX60 and applying the brakes when necessary.
Some safety enhancements made in the XC60 for the 2013 model year came in response to the IIHS’s stringent new testing. The “+” distinction is awarded to those vehicles that excel in the traditional testing, as well as the new small overlap crash test. Volvo equipped the 2013 XC60 with a new airbag algorithm that is able to deploy the side curtain airbags to account for varying impact points, which allowed it to receive the highest possible score in every collision-tested scenario.
The 2013 XC60 is Volvo’s latest testament to its “Vision 2020”, which is the automaker’s plan to create a vehicle that eliminates all vehicular fatalities by 2020.
